John Terry: I know how you feel
The moment that John Terry missed that penalty for Chelsea in the Champions League Final, I took off my FootballCynic hat off and let my mind race back 30 years or more. I can still remember that bright Sunday morning in a park in South East London. I got up early feeling great, despite several pints the night before. I took the 26 bus, coincidentally the same number as John's shirt, and arrived in good time for our Arthur Scroggs Memorial Lewisham & District Sunday Morning Reserve Cup Final. I played the best 120 minutes of football in my life as my team fought for every ball and battled to draw 1-1 against the mighty Dynamo Deptford Park Reserves, the "Manchester United of our division". And, then, it was my turn to clinch the final with the final penalty. I still can recall my run up and the confidence I was feeling. As I went to strike the ball, I could see the Russian groundsman smirk as a loose piece of turf caused me to slip and send the ball agonisingly wide. If John Terry is reading this, I can tell him now that he will never get over it. I haven't. John, for a small percentage of your weekly wages, I am prepared to offer counselling, as you, like me, will have to fight to resurrect your football career; your bank balance is surely secondary and could be used wisely on my modest fees. It's a tough road, but it can be done. John, Contact me at footballcynic@footballcynic.com
